Trendy water bottles help make staying hydrated easy and fashionable

Jul 15, 2023Jul 15, 2023

If you visit Dick’s Sporting Goods at the Coventry Mall you can’t miss a colorful array of water bottles and cups on display near the entrance. They are some of the latest and hottest designs by Stanley.

Whoever thought that staying hydrated could be associated with being on trend? It turns out that videos on TikTok are making certain colors and styles of water bottles in very high demand.

“They are a TikTok phenomenon,” Josh McFarland, store manager at Dicks’, said of the Stanley “Quencher Tumbler.” “We had a teacher come in and buy 40 of them — all the teachers want them.”

If you go on TikTok you can watch several videos, many of which have over 1 million likes covering how to use the Quencher, different must-have styles and even accessories for them.

“This is all the rage,” said Dan Duffy, a sales associate at Dick’s. “They always sell out and are sold on the marketplace for 90 bucks.”

The retail cost is $45 for a 40 oz. tumbler at Dicks’ and people are coming in to buy huge quantities of them at retail, particularly certain colors, and then are up charging them for resale. A new color they put out today called “Pool” is one they anticipate will be flying off the shelves in less than 24 hours despite there being eight other colors on display.

“By tomorrow, this blue color will still be here and all of these will be gone,” Duffy said, referring to the “Sky” color over another darker blue color they had on display. “Once a color catches on, it flies right off the shelves once it starts picking up steam like that — social media has been a huge influence in this game.”

The thing about hydrating in style is that it’s not limited to students playing soccer, tennis and cross-country teams this fall. Even adults are getting in on it for everyday usage to hydrate during the day at their workplace, whether at a construction job site or in a classroom.

Water bottles are one of the latest “it” accessories and the great thing about being equipped with one is that you can refill it all day long to conveniently stay hydrated from morning to night.

The three main brands dominating the water bottle category at Dick’s are Stanley, Yeti and Hydro Flask.

“It’s one of our biggest selling categories,” McFarland said of the hydration vessels.

One thing that all of the brands offer is various sizes, typically ranging from 20 to 40 ounces, and various designs in a rainbow of colors. Some have caps with straws and others have twist-off caps among many different types of designs. They all offer double-wall insulation vessels to keep beverages hot and cold for extended periods of time, along with various tops that prevent leakage.

“I have a Yeti, a Hyrdroflask, and my wife has a Stanley and they are all the same,” he said of their performance, so what it comes down to is customer preference.

The good thing about this trend from a health perspective is that it’s making it stylish to stay hydrated, which is important both on and off the sports field. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights many reasons water is beneficial for all ages.

“Getting enough water every day is important for your health,” the CDC says on their website. “Drinking water can prevent dehydration, a condition that can cause unclear thinking, result in mood change, cause your body to overheat, and lead to constipation and kidney stones.”

The CDC also highlights that water has no calories, ‘so it can help with body weight and reducing calorie intake when substituted for drinks with calories, such as sweet tea or regular soda’.

Water can help your body keep a normal temperature, lubricate and cushion joints, and protect your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues. In addition, it helps your body get rid of wastes through urination, perspiration and bowel movements.

One of the CDC’s top tips for drinking more water is to carry a water bottle with you and refill it throughout the day.

• Carry a water bottle with you and refill it throughout the day

• Freeze some freezer-safe water bottles (take one with you for ice-cold water all day long)

• Choose water over sugary drinks

• Opt for water when eating out (you’ll save money and reduce calories)

• Serve water during meals

• Add a wedge of lime or lemon to your water (this can help improve the taste)

• Make sure your kids are getting enough water too
